This is a question we ask ourselves regularly and we don’t always have the right answer. How often should we change our toothbrush to ensure good oral hygiene? We asked this question to Dr. Lequart, dental surgeon and spokesman for the UFSBD.
Every season…
Since we use our toothbrush daily, it is important to change it regularly. “Every 3 months to be exact,” says Dr. Lequart. A mnemonic way to remember it? With each change of season.” Yes, regardless of the type of toothbrush – manual or electric – the bristles inevitably become damaged over time. Naturally, tooth brushing becomes less effective, dental plaque accumulates and the risk of cavities, gingivitis or periodontal disease increases.
…but not only!
Other circumstances lead to a change of toothbrush. First of all, it is good to remember that if the bristles become worn and frayed before the recommended 3 months, it is a good idea to adopt a new brush. Second, it is also recommended to change when you are sick (gastro, flu, Covid-19, etc.). Viruses stagnate and microbes survive on toothbrush bristles. According to the expert, there are also some good precautions to be taken in this particular case: “Never let the brush dry on a flat, damp surface. Encourage head-up drying to prevent the development of microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, yeasts) and above all, do not put all toothbrushes in the same jar to avoid cross-contamination, in other words, prevent the transfer of viruses to the bristles of the neighboring toothbrush, because this way you can get sick. Dr. Lequart calls it: “barrier gestures of the bathroom”.
An interim solution?
The expert is clear, “a simple rinse with water will not destroy the bacteria on the toothbrush”. On the other hand, even if it doesn’t extend its life, there are some solutions to clean it, especially if you’ve been sick. First, “you can simply soak it in antiseptic mouthwash. Then, and only with brushes that allow this, such as those from the Inava brand, you can place the brush upside down in water for one minute in the microwave at 600W. This helps eliminate as much bacteria as possible.”
