The Ordinals, the United States’ Cybersecurity “Vulnerability”?

This is the current controversy in the Bitcoin (BTC) ecosystem. At the beginning of the month, one of the most followed developers on Bitcoin, Luke Dashjr, invaded the Ordinals system. It judges Bitcoin listings – which can be used as non-fungible token (NFT) equivalents – as an aberration.

Since then, the debate has raged and the Bitcoin ecosystem fears that Ordinals will disappear. This week, however, the dispute reached a new stage. One individual recorded on 9 December bitcoin network vulnerability report, in the United States database. According to her, Ordinals are this vulnerability.

The National Vulnerability Database (NVD) is a database maintained by an institute of the United States Department of Commerce. Identifies risks to the cybersecurity of the United States, and gave an “average” severity score to the error submitted by Ordinals.

The person who created the report doesn’t directly name Ordinals, but explains why he thinks the listings are problematic:

As a reminder, Bitcoin Core is the most widely used client software for the Bitcoin network. It should also be noted that Luke Dashjr promotes a competing version of the software : Self-developed Bitcoin nodes.

Luke Dashjr at the origin of this message?

It didn’t take long for reports to surface explaining that Luke Dashjr was behind the news. According to our CoinTelegraph colleagues who interviewed him, the developer asked for a CVE number to be generated… But he didn’t upload the report himself. That means they think it’s a good idea. :

Average score I think underestimates the impact (line)and that this does not account for the long-term effects of a saturated blockchain.»

Luke Dashjr also implemented a “fix” for Bitcoin nodes. Nodes using it can no longer verify transactions using the Ordinals protocol.

The debate in the ecosystem continues to rage

The debate is therefore political as well as technological and highlights differences in philosophy between several historical actors bitcoin ecosystem. For some, Ordinals are indeed a threat to Bitcoin adoption, which would only monopolize the network for useless purposes. But for others, it is a revolution that shows the dynamics of the ecosystem.

Although this debate occupies a prominent place, it should be remembered that with Bitcoin, users and minors have priority. Indeed, the latter have a financial interest in maintaining the Ordinals, given the significant costs they generate. And the interest of users in listings is evident.

So what does the future hold for Ordinals? For Luke Dashjr, they represent a wrong that needs to be righted, but at the moment it doesn’t seem ready to go away. In any case, this is certain the debate will continue within the ecosystem.
