The real estate crisis that France is experiencing is “incomparable violence”. “It deeply affects all new entrants (…) and there is no real solution for them today”notes Véronique Bédague, CEO of the Nexity real estate group, guest of “4 Vérités” on France 2, Monday, November 20.

“There is not enough supply of housing in this country. And until there is enough supply, prices will not come down. (…) The second crisis that is coming is the apparent increase in interest rates after the war in Ukraine. The French have lost approximately 25% of their purchasing power in 18 months. (…) At the beginning of last year they were borrowing at around 1%, now they are borrowing at around 4.2% without insurance costs.”specifies Véronique Bédague.

“About 30% fewer new homes”

What is the industry horizon? “This year we will sell 30% less new housing than last year. This will really be felt by the French in their daily lives at the start of the 2025-2026 school year, which will be even more tense than the start of the school year. that we live today”estimates the CEO of Nexity.

The future also looks bleak in the construction industry. “I think there will be layoffs. We estimate those layoffs at about 300,000 people across the real estate sector.”says Véronique Bédague.
