About a hundred kilometers from the North Sea on the Elbe, Hamburg occupies a strategic location. Thanks to its port, trade has enriched the city for centuries. The best place to realize this is undoubtedly the Speicherstadt. It is built on swamps and is the largest warehouse complex in the world. The Port of Hamburg, a former lighthouse of the Hanseatic League in the Middle Ages, is currently the largest in Germany and the third largest in Europe.
Floating hotel
Schlafen im Hafen is the only floating hotel in the city. At 110 euros a night you can find cheaper, but it’s pretty cheap for Hamburg. Our special correspondent was able to spend the night on board a hotel ship in the heart of the harbor, which he visited the next day. At the river station, he found a “good deal” for two euros: to explore the gigantic port, you just need to take a normal boat, not a tourist ferry. We also travel by proxy in port.
