VIDEO – Strasbourg: raise your head, you haven’t seen everything!

Just look up and discover the hidden treasures of Strasbourg (Bas-Rhin).
The team from TF1 13H will show you the city from a different angle.

You have to look up first or there is no chance to discover it. The statue on the top floor of the building is little known, even to Strasbourg residents. “It’s true that we rarely have our heads in the air”, smiles Albane Eglemme, responsible for communications at the Euro Métropole archive service in Strasbourg (Bas-Rhin). Whether they are watching over us or not, statues are much more than decorative accessories. They say a lot about the time, they have their history and they can tell us if we are interested.

Sculptures that shock

Formerly “Black Forest Bridge”, now “Kennedy Bridge”, it is called simply “Four Men Bridge”. In 1904, when these giants were installed, Alsace was German. These monumental sculptures seem kitsch to you, they were revolutionary in their time. But this realism is shocking. Workers in shirts in a bourgeois district, built for the burghers, some residents do not accept this and will complain to the town hall. In vain. They are still there.

The roof of the National and University Library is one of photographer Olivier Hannauer’s favorite places. “Above two statues which are two allegories on one side of science and on the other of the art of literature”, he specifies in the TF1 13:00 video at the top of this article. Neustadt has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988. Between the dog and the wolf, the lights enlarge the space.

When it comes to statues, the cathedral is no exception. It is surprising, but no one knows exactly how many there are, at least 5000. The story of Christ is everywhere. There is no alphabet here, the story is told with a chisel on pink sandstone. Don’t forget to look up, there’s probably a lot more to discover.
